Our research

Driving research excellence in Southeast Asia

Our researchers specialise in a broad range of disciplines including history, law, political science, agriculture, medicine, veterinary science and more.

The cornerstone of the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre is our research excellence. Scholars working on Southeast Asia specialise in an extraordinary range of disciplines from history to law, political science, agriculture, medicine and veterinary science.

Our breadth of disciplinary focus is matched by the range of research topics on offer at the University of Sydney, from human rights and social movements to health, natural resource management, linguistics and literature, among others.

We support research into Southeast Asia in a number of ways:

  • showcasing University of Sydney academics’ work in the region
  • supporting disciplinary experts with an interest in Southeast Asia
  • bringing academics and practitioners together to generate research opportunities.

Areas of research strength

Our researchers work within five areas of strength to address real-world problems in Southeast Asia, including:

  • Economic and social development
  • Environment and resources
  • Health
  • Heritage and the arts
  • State and society
