Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2024, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 2  Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is full time or part time according to student choice.

3  Master's type

The master's degree in these resolutions is a professional master's course, as defined by the Coursework Policy.

4  Embedded courses in this sequence

(1) The embedded courses in this sequence are:

(a) the Graduate Certificate in Urban and Regional Planning

(b) the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning

(c) the Master of Urban and Regional Planning

(2) Providing candidates satisfy the admission requirements for each stage, a candidate may progress to the award of any of the courses in this sequence. Only the longest award completed will be conferred.

5  Admission to candidature

(1) Available places will be offered to qualified applicants based on merit, according to the following admissions criteria.

(2) Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Urban and Regional Planning requires a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification.

(3) Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning requires:

(a) a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification; or

(b) completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate certificate with an average mark of at least 70.

(4) Admission to the Master of Urban and Regional Planning requires:

(a) a bachelor's degree in design, human geography or related field from the University of Sydney or an equivalent qualification with a credit average mark across all units; or

(b) completion of the requirements of the embedded graduate diploma with an average mark of at least 70.

(5) In exceptional circumstances the Head of School and Dean may admit applicants without these qualifications but whose evidence of experience and achievement is deemed by the Head of School and Dean to be equivalent.

6 Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the courses are set out in the relevant degree table.

(2) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Certificate in Urban and Regional Planning, a candidate must complete 24 credit points, including:

(a) minimum 18 credit points of core units of study; and

(b) maximum 6 credit points of elective units of study.

(3) To qualify for the award of the Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning, a candidate must complete 48 credit points, including:

(a) minimum 30 credit points of core units of study; and

(b) maximum 18 credit points of elective units of study.

(4) To qualify for the award of the Master of Urban and Regional Planning, a candidate must complete 72 credit points including:

(a) minimum 48 credit points of core units of study; and

(b) maximum 24 credit points of elective units of study.

(5) Core units completed in excess of the minimum requirements may count as optional or elective units of study.

(6) Optional units completed in excess of the minimum requirements may count as elective units of study.

7 Course transfer

A candidate for the master's degree or graduate diploma may elect to discontinue study and graduate with a shorter award from this embedded sequence, with the approval of the Head of School and Dean, and provided the requirements of the shorter award have been met.

8 Recognition of Prior Learning

(1) Subject to the specific provisions of this clause 8, prior learning may be recognised consistently with the requirements of the Coursework Policy and the Resolutions of the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

(2) Students who have completed units in postgraduate programs in Heritage Conservation, Urban Design or Urbanism in this School, and have

i. not received an award (or will not receive the award for the program, may transfer all relevant credit to the Master of Urban and Regional Planning, in accordance with the provisions of the Coursework Rule

ii. received an award (or will receive an award) for the program are eligible for a reduced volume of learning for a maximum of 24 credit points.

(3) Candidates enrolled in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning, Master of Urban Design and Master of Heritage Conservation may apply to transfer to the Master of Urbanism subject to meeting the requirements for admission as set out in part 5 (2) of the admission to candidature section.

(4) Candidates of the Master of Urbanism, Master of Urban Design and Master of Heritage Conservation applying for admission to the Master of Urban and Rural Planning upon acceptance, may apply for credit for equivalent units completed towards the Master of Urbanism, noting they still need to meet or have met the core unit and elective requirements for the Master of Urban and Rural Planning.

9 Transitional provisions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commence their candidature after 1 January, 2026. Students who commenced prior to 1 January 2026 will complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
