Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) is primarily designed to introduce university teachers to current principles, practices, debates and research in higher education.

Candidates are encouraged to develop scholarly, research-led approaches to teaching while engaging in activities and tasks aimed at cultivating critical reflection about higher education.

University of Sydney staff or affiliates applying for a fee-waiver scholarship must provide (a) their staff or affiliate ID number, (b) a copy of their appointment contract (must be a minimum of one year), (c) all relevant academic transcripts, and (d – affiliates only) evidence that they will be teaching enrolled University of Sydney students during the applicant’s period of candidature.

What you'll study

Candidates are required to complete a total of 24 credit points.  

Completion requirement

Under normal progression, a part-time students may undertake prescribed units of study up to the value of 12 credit points per semester. You are required to attend all lectures, tutorials and other activities prescribed for your units of study.

Admission requirement

Admission to candidature requires:

(i) a Bachelor of Education from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and either the completion of postgraduate studies, or professional experience equivalent to one year full-time in a field considered by the Faculty to be appropriate to the program of study; or

(ii) a bachelor's degree and either the Graduate Diploma in Education or Bachelor of Teaching or Master of Teaching from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification; or

(iii) a bachelor's degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification and either the completion of postgraduate studies in Education, or professional experience equivalent to two years full-time in a field considered by the Faculty to be appropriate to the program of study. Applicants must be currently engaged in university teaching.

Professional accreditation

The course does not provide a recognised teaching qualification but is part of the broader postgraduate educational studies program for leaders and future leaders of dynamic and innovative education.
