Overview

In response to COVID-19, the University of Sydney has reviewed the availability of courses to be delivered remotely for students commencing their studies in Semester 1, 2021.

This course will be available to study remotely for students commencing in Semester 1, 2021. Please note that some units of study that are not essential to completing the degree may not be available to be studied remotely.

Note: The University intends to offer as many units of study as possible in a remote as well as face-to-face learning method of delivery in Semester 1, 2021 and subject to ongoing border closures and public health orders impacting attendance on campus, in Semester 2, 2021. However, some units of study and courses require students to study in-person at the relevant University of Sydney campus/es and host locations for placements and will not be available remotely. 

About this course

The Master of Digital Communication and Culture is a unique degree that offers a flexible program of study in multiple aspects of digital communication and culture, including the latest developments in internet platforms, social media, research tools, digital audiences, mobile media, online governance, cross-media creative and games.

This degree provides a comprehensive platform from which to engage with digital technologies and their cultural contexts. You will gain an understanding of the recent literature on technological change and its cultural contexts.

You may choose elective units based on selected and recommended pathways from Arts and Social Sciences, Sydney College of the Arts, Interactive Design and Electronic Arts and Information Technologies.  

Commonwealth Supported Places

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are available for postgraduate study for eligible domestic students. This means that your course fees are subsidised by the Australian Government and you pay a student contribution amount (SCA). CSPs are limited in number and are allocated based on academic merit.

What you'll study

To qualify for the Master of Digital Communication and Culture you must complete 72 credit points, including:

  • 24 credit points of core units of study:
    • ARIN6902 Internet Governance
    • ARIN6904 Mobile Media and Games
    • ARIN6905 New Media Audiences
    • ARIN6903 Digital Media and Society; and
  • up to 42 credit points from elective units of study; and
  • at least 6 credit points of capstone units of study.

Candidates are encouraged to complete core units of study in their first year of study.

Recognition of Prior Learning / credit for previous studies is available for this course, refer to Admission requirement below.

Completion requirement

Under normal progression, a full-time student completes prescribed units of study to the value of 24 credit points per semester. Part-time students may undertake prescribed units of study up to the value of 12 credit points per semester. You are required to attend all lectures, tutorials and other activities prescribed for your units of study.

Capstone (compulsory project)

Towards the end of your degree you will complete a capstone experience. This can be:

  • an internship organised by the Department of Media and Communications; or
  • pofessional practice (1 semester: MECO6935); or
  • a dissertation (2 semesters: MECO6904 Dissertation Part 1 and MECO6905 Dissertation Part 2), investigating some aspect of cultural change associated with digital technologies.

Research is typically interdisciplinary in scope, and may involve interpretive, historical and/or field research with digital media texts, producers or users.

Admission requirement

Entry in the 1 year or 1.5 year degree program is determined by the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) criteria below:

Admission to candidature for the Master of Digital Communication and Culture (1.5 years full-time) requires:

  • a bachelor's degree with a minimum credit (65%) average calculated over the whole degree, including a major in a relevant subject area in the humanities or social sciences, from the University of Sydney, or an equivalent qualification.

Admission to candidature for the Master of Digital Communication and Culture (1 year full-time) requires:

  • completion of the embedded Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Digital Communication and Culture with a minimum credit (65%) average, or an equivalent qualification; or
  • an Honours degree in a relevant discipline; or
  • relevant professional work experience and a bachelor's degree with a minimum credit (65%) average or an equivalent qualification.

If you do not meet the requirements listed above for direct entry to the Master’s degree, you may be able to enter via a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in the same subject area and upgrade to the Master’s after successful completion of the shorter course.

Course opportunities

You can undertake an internship as a capstone experience, coordinated by staff within the Department of Media and Communications.

Graduates work as creatives, journalists, educators, strategists and policymakers in technology domains and in a range of technologically mediated industries and organisations including media, the public sector, advertising, education, museums, culture, entertainment, telecommunications, IT and games.

This program is particularly valuable for professionals moving into the emerging content, services and leadership roles opening up in broadband, mobile telecommunications and computer entertainment.
