Unit of study tables

SCM units of study are categorised in the areas listed below. Elective units of study are available in all categories, except Principal Study and Program Focus, Honours and Special Purpose.

Principal Study

Principal Study defines the practice and study of a specific instrument or voice. Principal Study units are core units of study exclusive to students enrolled in the performance stream. Program Focus units of study are available only to enrolled students in a program or musicology major.

Analytical, Historical and Cultural Studies

Made up of two groups, 1) AHCS Foundation units, which are core units prescribed for music enrolled students in each stream and program/major, 2) AHCS electives are to be taken by music students to fulfil the AHCS requirements within a music degree. Many of these electives are also available in the Music major and Table S electives.

Contemporary Music Studies

Apart from the core unit of study, MUSC1611, these units can be taken as electives for enrolled music students. A portion of them is also available in the Music major and Table S electives.

Composition Studies

Made up of core units of study and electives. The core units are prescribed in the enrolment patterns for composition, and the programs.

Music Education and Pedagogy

Music Education units are core units of study for students undertaking the Bachelor of Music (Music Education) degree. The pedagogy units apply to students undertaking the Bachelor of Music (Performance), relevant to their principal study area.

Music Skills

Contains groups of core units and electives. The core units are Music Theory and Aural Skills, prescribed only for enrolled music students. The electives are general music skills electives, music technology electives and practical keyboard electives.

Music Technology

Made up of core units of study and electives. The core units are prescribed in the enrolment patterns for composition, and the programs.

Performance and Ensemble

Made up of core units of study and electives. Specific Performance and Ensemble units apply to all music enrolled students. A select group of the units are available as electives where an audition is required for entry.

Professional Industry, OLE

Contains groupings of core units for all music enrolled students, and electives. The electives are grouped into practical experience units, and open learning environment units.

Honours

Core units for enrolled music students undertaking an embedded or appended Honours year.

Special Purpose

Made up of exchange and music project units of study. Exchange units apply to students undertaking any Bachelor of Music degree through an exchange program overseas. Music project units apply to students undertaking a specific project relevant to their undergraduate Music degree.
