Surgery pre-2020 enrolment

Students enrolled in the Master of Surgery, Graduate Certificate in Surgery (Breast Surgery) and the Graduate Certificate in Surgical Sciences prior to 2020 are able to complete the course in its original structure. Students who have not commenced or completed dissertation units of study may instead elect to transfer to one of the courses launching in 2020.

Overview

The Master of Surgery program offers a range of different study options, with five specialty streams to select from:

• Surgical Sciences
• Surgical Skills
• Surgical Anatomy
• Breast Surgery
• Research Dissertation (surgical sub-specialty).

The Research/ Specialty stream requires completion of a dissertation based on a research project (up to 20,000 words) in your area of interest. The specific stream is comprised of two units of study worth 18 credit points.

The stream you elect will be reflected on your graduating testamur eg, Master of Surgery (Surgical Sciences), (Surgical Anatomy), (Surgical Skills) or (research speciality).

The Graduate Certificate in Surgical Sciences comprises units of study designed to enable high achieving medical students in years III and IV of a graduate medical program, who are keen to pursue a surgical career, to prepare early for the GSSE part 1 examination with the option to upgrade to a Master’s on completion of the requirements.

All courses have been developed and are taught by clinical academic surgeons and are designed to equip students with the skills needed to best manage patients with evidence-based care and improved surgical skills.

The Graduate Certificate of Advanced Clinical Skills (Surgical Anatomy) provides an opportunity to participate in a cadaveric whole-body dissection course taught and supervised by specialty surgeons in regional gross anatomy essential to a surgical career. It is designed to better prepare students for both the GSSE barrier exam and for the Part 2 examinations in anatomy and operative surgery. The course is accredited by the RACS and on completion may be credited towards the Master of Surgery. By simultaneously enrolling in this degree, students enrolled in the Master of Surgery can elect to do any of these units of study ie regional or whole body dissection.

The Graduate Certificate of Surgery (Breast Surgery) is designed for Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery or equivalent, who are training or have completed training, in breast surgery. The breast surgery coursework has been developed in collaboration with Breast Surgeons of Australia and New Zealand Inc.

Accreditation

The postgraduate surgery program offers a range of courses for medical graduates, surgical trainees and surgeons. All subjects are accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS).
