  • have been accepted to undertake an eight-week or two four-week elective terms in orthopaedic and traumatic surgery at approved institution(s).

This scholarship is funded by a donation from the AM Taylor Trust held by Australian Executor Trustees.

Terms and Conditions

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2008 to provide assistance to students studying a Doctor of Medicine and undertaking an elective term in Orthopaedic and Traumatic Surgery.

b. This Scholarship is funded by a donation from the AM Taylor Trust held by Australian Executor Trustees.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in the third year of a Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Sydney. 

b. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident.

c. Applicants must be undertaking an eight-week elective term or two four-week elective terms in Orthopaedic and Traumatic Surgery at an approved institution(s).

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, 

II. curriculum vitae,

III. references, and

IV. a personal statement. 

b. Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School and Dean of the Sydney Medical School, or their nominated delegate(s).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $10,000 and is tenable for the elective term period. 

b. The Scholarship value will be paid in two instalments.

c. The first instalment of $5,000 will be paid prior to the elective term, upon submission of the recipient’s budget and itinerary (including accommodation and airfare), confirmation of the placement, and approval from the relevant Head of Clinical School. 

d. The second instalment of up to $5,000 will be paid after the Elective Term, following timely submission of the recipient’s Elective Report and other Elective assessment requirements, provided they are of sufficient merit, as determined by the Year 4 coordinator the Sydney Medical School, or their nominated delegate(s).  

e. Deferral of the scholarship is not permitted.

f. The scholarship cannot be transferred to another University school, faculty or university. 

g. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

h. Travel insurance will be provided by the University of Sydney in accordance with University policy.

i. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. changes their elective term placement prior to notifying the Sydney Medical School,

III. commences part-time study without prior approval from the Head of School and Dean, The University of Sydney School of Medicine, 

IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 

V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 

VI. is awarded an alternative scholarship for their Sydney Medical School Elective Term placement. In such circumstances this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative Scholarship where the alternative Scholarship is of higher value, or

VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed. 

6. Other requirements 

a. The recipient of this Scholarship is required to submit a one-page summary of learning outcomes for the donor.
