You must:

  • be a domestic or international student
  • be currently enrolled in the third year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the Sydney Medical School
  • be undertaking an Elective Term in an Asia-Pacific region.

This scholarship was established in 2024 to provide assistance to students studying at the University of Sydney School of Medicine (Sydney Medical School) in undertaking their elective term studies in an Asia-Pacific region.

This scholarship was established in 2024 and has been donated by the Returned & Services League of Australia Limited.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2024 to provide assist to students studying at the University of Sydney School of Medicine (Sydney Medical School) in undertaking their elective term studies in an Asia-Pacific region.

b. This Scholarship has been donated by the Returned & Services League of Australia Limited.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled in the third year of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at the Sydney Medical School.

b. Applicants must be undertaking an Elective Term in an Asia-Pacific region for the full duration of the approved elective term period.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

1. Academic merit.

2. Curriculum vitae

3. A personal statement outlining: (maximum of 1,000 words)

• the elective term itinerary, including location(s) and host institution(s);

• the applicant’s goals for the elective term.

• the applicant’s commitment to their studies; and

• why the applicant is deserving of the Scholarship.

b. Short listed applicants may be required to attend an interview.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of School and Dean of the Sydney Medical School, or their nominated delegate(s).

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $3,500 and is tenable for the elective term period.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid as a one-off payment upon receipt of the signed Terms and Conditions and Acceptance Form.

c. Deferral of the scholarship is not permitted.

d. The scholarship cannot be transferred to another University school, faculty or university.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. Travel insurance will be provided by the University of Sydney in accordance with university policy.

g. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing Eligibility

a. None apply.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. changes their elective term placement prior to notifying the Sydney Medical School,

III. commences part-time study without prior approval from the Head of School and Dean, The University of Sydney School of Medicine,

IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

VI. is awarded an alternative scholarship for their Sydney Medical School Elective Term placement. In such circumstances this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative Scholarship where the alternative Scholarship is of higher value, or

VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error. 

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
