Who's eligible

You must:

  • be currently enrolled full-time in the third year of a Doctor of Medicine at the Westmead Clinical School, University of Sydney. 
  • be undertaking an Elective Term in a developing country or Indigenous health facilities in Australia.

Background

Established to provide assistance to final year medical students who are pursuing an Elective Term in developing countries or Indigenous health facilities in Australia.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established to provide assistance to final year medical students who are pursuing an Elective Term in developing countries or Indigenous health facilities in Australia.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in the third year of a Doctor of Medicine at the Westmead Clinical School, University of Sydney. 

b. Applicants must be undertaking an Elective Term in a developing country or Indigenous health facilities in Australia.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, 

II. a reference from a Clinician or Academic associated with Westmead Clinical School, provided as a short letter, and 

III. a personal statement describing the following:

a) the elective term details provided as an itinerary which includes the location and institution,

b) the applicant’s goals for the elective term,

c) the applicant’s commitment to their study, and

d) why the applicant is deserving of the scholarship.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of Clinical School, Westmead Clinical School, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The scholarship is valued at $2,000 and will be paid as a one-off payment.

b. The scholarship payment will be paid on recipient of the Acceptance Form and evidence of travel expenses. The evidence of the travel expenses does not have to equal the exact amount of the scholarship and can include evidence of travel, accommodation, and daily living.

c. Deferral and/or suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted.

d. The Scholarship cannot be transferred to another University school, faculty or university. 

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. Travel insurance will be provided by the University of Sydney in accordance with University policy.

g. No other amount is payable.

5. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. changes their Elective Term placement prior to notifying the Westmead Clinical School,

III. commences part-time study without prior approval of the Head of Clinical School, Westmead Clinical School. 

IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 

V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 

VI. is awarded an alternative scholarship for their Sydney Medical School Elective Term placement. In such circumstances this Scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative Scholarship where the alternative Scholarship is of higher value, or

VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed. 

6. Other Requirements 

a. The recipient of this scholarship is required to submit a brief outline of their achievements following the elective term(s) and present at the Westmead Medical Grand Rounds.
