Postgraduate Writing Retreat

Dedicate yourself to three days of deep writing at a special winter edition of our popular Writing Retreat

Postgraduate students researching Southeast Asia are invited to attend a dedicated writing retreat hosted offsite by the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre. This retreat is designed to provide you with both inspiration and peer support to achieve your writing goals in 2024.

When: From 9.30am-5.30pm each day, Tuesday 9 July to Thursday 11 July 2024. 

Where: HC Coombs Centre, Kirribilli

Escape the winter chill at a special winter edition of the SSEAC residential writing retreat for postgraduate students. Cocoon yourself from the winter chill and let the fires of progress and productivity keep you warm and inspired. Reserve your spot now and stay cozy while making scholarly strides!

The program will include structured writing time, informal discussions and debriefing sessions, and plenty of good food and coffee. 

Expected outcomes of the retreat include:

  • Making meaningful progress on an academic output 

  • Reflecting on your own writing habits and productivity

  • Connecting with other researchers from the University of Sydney

Please take note of this timeline, especially if you are applying from out of state. We are unable to advise of the success of your application any earlier than this. Please do not make flight and accommodation bookings unless and until you have been advised that your application is successful.

  • This retreat is available in day mode only

  • It will commence at 9.30am and conclude at 5.30pm each day, from Tuesday 9 July to Thursday 11 July

To be eligible for this writing retreat, applicants must be: 

  • A member of SSEAC– you can join here for free

  • Conducting research on any of the countries within Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam), or Southeast Asia as a region

  • A postgraduate student (Honours, Masters or PhD) at an Australian tertiary institution  

  • Able to make your own way to HC Coombs Centre in Kirribilli

  • This is a non-residential retreat (meaning no overnight stays)

  • Priority will be given to University of Sydney students, and then on a first come first served basis.

  • There are limited travel grants available for this retreat

  • You will need to make your own way to the venue retreat. There is limited undercover parking, and public transport is recommended. More details will be provided should you be accepted into the retreat 

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants based outside of Sydney to participate in the program. The grant can be used for travel, accommodation and any other costs associated with participation.

Grants will be allocated on a first come first served basis . Please indicate in the application form if you wish to be considered for a grant.

Grant recipients must attend ALL days of the retreat. Grants will be issued AFTER confirmation of full attendance at the retreat. SSEAC is not liable for any costs incurred from the cancellation of travel.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to award grants to participants at non-Australian institutions or participants who are based outside of Australia. No grants will be provided to applicants based in Sydney.
