Coursework

The Master of Education (Sports Coaching) program has been designed for elite-level coaches and experienced elite athletes seeking to become coaches.

Face-to-face and online delivery of units of study by highly respected academics and experts in the field is a feature of the course. Local and overseas students and a range of teaching settings contribute to a unique experience in and beyond the classroom. Participants have the opportunity to develop networks across a variety of sports.

The Master of Education (Sports Coaching) will equip you to apply a range of coaching principles and strategies to a wide and often unpredictable variety of coaching situations. You will acquire the capacity to:

• apply professional and academic knowledge in developing and implementing effective learning environments for developing and elite athletes
• develop, implement and critically evaluate programs or interventions to holistically develop athletes and improve performance. 
• critically analyse and reflect on your coaching and implement relevant changes to your practice to enhance learning and performance. 
• lead and collaborate with others, develop a team culture
• examine the technological resources available to support the implementation of specific strategies in coaching athletes and teams.
• engage with and understand the nexus between practice, theory and research.

Awards and requirements

Master of Education (Sports Coaching)

To qualify for the award of Master of Education (Sports Coaching), candidates are required to complete a total of 48 credit points, including:

• a minimum of 30 credit points from this stream; comprising:
  - a minimum of 24 credit points of core units of study;
  - a minimum of 6 credit points of elective units of study; plus
• a minimum of 6 credit points of capstone units of study; and
• a maximum of 12 credit points of postgraduate Education units which can be chosen from any Master of Education program

Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Sports Coaching)

To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Sports Coaching) candidates are required to complete a total of 36 credit points, including:

• a minimum of 24 credit points of core units of study;
• a minimum of 6 credit points of elective units of study; plus
• a maximum of 6 credit points of postgraduate Education units from any Master of Education program

* The Graduate Diploma is only available to candidates who commenced their studies prior to 29 April 2025.

Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Sports Coaching)

To qualify for the award of Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Sports Coaching) candidates are required to complete a total of 24 credit points, including

• a minimum of 18 credit points of core units of study; and
• a maximum of 6 credit points of elective units of study
