Bachelor of Agricultural Science

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 1  Course codes

2  Attendance pattern

(1) The attendance pattern for this course is full time or part time according to candidate choice.

(2) Visa requirements commonly restrict international students to full time study only.

3  Degree type

(1) This is a single bachelor's degree.

4  Bachelor type

(1) Specialist

5  Faculty management

(1) This degree is managed by the Faculty of Science.

6 Admission to candidature

(1) Admission to candidature is available on two bases:

(a) direct admission on the basis of prior study as specified in subclause 6(2); or

(b) by transfer from the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours.

(2) Admission is available on the basis of: 

(a) a secondary school leaving qualification, such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including interstate and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program.

(b) English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

(c) Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. 

(d) Applicants are ranked by merit according to the category of admission and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. 

(3) Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Rule and Coursework Policy. 

(4) Admission is available to students transferring from the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours 

(a) Transferring students are eligible for credit for all units of study successfully completed as part of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours. 

7  Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Agricultural Science are set out in:

(a) Table A for the Bachelor of Agricultural Science.

(2) In these resolutions, except where otherwise specified, ‘Table A’, mean Table A for the degree as specified here.

(3) To qualify for the award of the degree Bachelor of Agricultural Science, a candidate must complete 144 credit points, comprising:

(a) 90 cps of degree core units of study as set out in Table A;

(b) 48 credit points of cognate major from the prescribed list of majors as listed in section 8 below;

(c) 6 credit points of 3000 level elective units as set out in Table A;

(d) Any additional elective units of study from Table A required to make up the 144 credit point total. 

8 Program, Majors and Minors

(1) Majors

(a) Major is as defined in the Learning and Teaching Policy.

(b) The requirements for completion of major is set out in Table A.

(c) Completion of a major is a requirement of the course.

(d) Candidates must complete a major from the prescribed list of cognate majors. A major requires the completion of 48 credit points chosen from units of study listed in the unit of study table for that major.

(e) The majors available in the Bachelor of Agricultural Science are:

• Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
• Environmental, Agricultural and Resource Economics
• Food Science
• Genetics and Genomics
• Microbiology
• Plant Science
• Soil Science and Hydrology 

9 Progression Requirements

(1) A student enrolled in an award course must meet the progression requirements and all the course requirements for an award course within the time limits for the course.

(2) Progression within a major

(a) Enrolment and progression within a major are governed by the progression rules specified for that component in the relevant Table. 

10 Award of the degree

(1) The Bachelor of Agricultural Science is awarded in the grade of Pass. 

11 Course transfer

(1) Candidates in the Bachelor of Agricultural Science may elect to transfer to the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours as long as they meet the progression requirements for the degree.

(2) Transferring students are eligible for credit for all units of study successfully completed as part of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science. 

12 Credit for previous study

(1) Credit transfer is subject to the provisions of the Coursework Policy, the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science. 

13 Transitional provisions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2024.
