Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 2  Attendance pattern

(1) The attendance pattern for this course is full time or part time according to candidate choice.

(2) Visa requirements commonly restrict international students to full time study only.

3  Degree type

(1) This is a single bachelor's degree with integrated Honours.

4  Bachelor type

(1) Specialist

5  Faculty management

(1) This degree is managed by the Faculty of Science.

6 Admission to candidature

(1) Admission to candidature is available on two bases:

(a) direct admission on the basis of prior study as specified in subclause 6(2); or

(b) by transfer from the Bachelor of Agricultural Science.

(2) Admission is available on the basis of:

(a) a secondary school leaving qualification, such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including interstate and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program.

(b) English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

(c) Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.

(c) Applicants are ranked by merit according to the category of admission and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking.

(3) Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Rule and Coursework Policy.

(4) Admission is available to students transferring from the Bachelor of Agricultural Science as long as they meet the progression requirement outlined in Section 9. 

(a) Transferring students are eligible for credit for all units of study successfully completed as part of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science.

7  Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Agricultural Science are set out in:

(a) Table A for the Bachelor of Agricultural Science.

(2) In these resolutions, except where otherwise specified, ‘Table A’, mean Table A for the degree as specified here.

(3) To qualify for the award of the degree Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours, a candidate must complete 192 credit points, comprising:

(a) 90 cps of degree core units of study as set out in Table A;

(b) 48 credit points of cognate major from the prescribed list of majors as listed in section 8 below;

(c) 6 credit points of 3000 level elective units as set out in Table A;

(d) 48 credit points of 4000-level Honours units as set out in Table A;

(e) Any additional elective units of study from Table A required to make up the 192 credit point total. 

8 Program, Majors and Minors

(1) Majors

(a) Major is as defined in the Leaming and Teaching Policy.

(b) The requirements for completion of major is set out in Table A.

(c) Completion of a major is a requirement of the course.

(d) Candidates must complete a major from the prescribed list of cognate majors. A major requires the completion of 48 credit points chosen from units of study listed in the unit of study table for that major.

(e) The majors available in the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours are

  • Animal Production
  • Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
  • Environmental, Agricultural and Resource Economics
  • Food Science
  • Genetics and Genomics
  • Microbiology
  • Plant Science
  • Soil Science and Hydrology 

9 Progression Requirements

(1) A student enrolled in an award course must meet the progression requirements and all the course requirements for an award course within the time limits for the course.

(2) To progress to the Honours year, students must have completed 144 credit points, including all core requirements, and achieved;

(a) a WAM of at least 65.0 in units of study, and a major or study of equivalent depth in the area of the proposed Honours subject area; or a credit average in 48 credit points in 2000-level and above units of study relevant to the Honours subject area, as determined by the School concerned; 

(b) Candidates who do not meet the progression requirements for honours may exit with the Bachelor of Agricultural Science as long as they meet the award requirements for the degree. 

(3) Progression within a major

(a) Enrolment and progression within a major are governed by the progression rules specified for that component in the relevant Table. 

10 Award of the degree

(1) The Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours is an integrated Honours course. In accordance with the Coursework Policy 2021, the award of Honours is assessed and calculated using a grade average based on 48 credit points of Honours units of study undertaken in the candidate's final year of study. These are set out in Bachelor of Agricultural Science Table A under 4000-level units of Study.

(2) The Bachelor of Agricultural Scisnce Honours is awarded in classes ranging from First Class to Third Class according to the conditions specified in the Coursework Policy 2021 and the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science. 

11 Course transfer

(1) Candidates in the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours may elect to transfer to the Bachelor of Agricultural Science. 

(2) Transferring students are eligible for credit for all units of study successfully completed as part of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours. 

12 Credit for previous study

(1) Credit transfer is subject to the provisions of the Coursework Policy, the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science. 

13 Transitional provisions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2024.
