Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes). 

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. 2  Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for this course is full-time or part-time according to student choice.

3  Embedded courses

(1) The embedded courses in this sequence are:

(a) Diploma of Foundation Studies;

(b) Advanced Diploma of Foundation Studies; and

(c) Bachelor of Science (Extended).

(2) All students will be admitted to and enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Extended).

(3) A student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Extended) may, with the permission of the Associate Dean (Education), elect to discontinue study and graduate with a lower award from the embedded sequence, provided that:

(a) for the Diploma of Foundation Studies, the student has successfully completed 36 credit points as specified in the course resolutions for the Diploma of Foundation Studies;

(b) for the Advanced Diploma of Foundation Studies, the student has successfully completed 72 credit points as specified in the course resolutions for the Advanced Diploma of Foundation Studies.

4  Streams

(1) The Bachelor of Science (Extended) is available in the following stream:

(a) Health

(2) Completion of a stream is not a requirement of the Bachelor of Science (Extended). The requirements for the completion of each stream are as specified in Table A for the Bachelor of Science (Extended)

5  Faculty management

(1) Students in the Bachelor of Science (Extended) will be under the general supervision of the Faculty of Science.

(2) The Dean of the Faculty of Science shall exercise authority in any matter concerned with the Bachelor of Science (Extended) not otherwise dealt with in these resolutions.

6  Admission to candidature

(1) Admission to this course is only available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants, who meet the process outlined in the Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

(2) Admission to this course will be on demonstrated potential for tertiary study to a standard sufficient to undertake the course as demonstrated in:

(a) A numeracy and literacy test; and

(b) A structured interview; and

(c) Evidence of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program; and

(d) A portfolio of written work or support material including a personal statement of intent for studying the course.

(3) English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

(4) Applicants are ranked on merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Policy.

7  Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the Bachelor of Science (Extended) are set out in:

(a) Table E for the Extended bachelor degrees; and

(b) Table A for the Bachelor of Science; and

(c) Table S of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees; and

(d) Table O of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees.

(2) To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Science (Extended), a student must complete 168 credit points of units of study, comprising:

(a) Degree Core: 12 credit points of units of study as set out in Table A Degree Core; and 12 credit points of 1000-level units of study as set out in Table A (excluding units present in Table A Degree Core); units used to meet the Degree Core requirement can also be used to meet the requirements for major(s) or minor(s); and

(b) 30 credit points of units of study from Table E comprising:

(i) 24 credit points of Foundation units of study; and

(ii) A 6 credit point Cultural Capstone Project unit; and

(c) A major (48 credit points of units of study) or stream defined in Section 7 below and listed in Table A; and

(d) A minor (36 credit points units of study) or second major (48 credit points of units of study) as defined in Section 7 below and listed in Table A or Table S; and

(e) 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O and

(f) where appropriate, elective units from Table A, Table S, Table O; and

(g) if enrolled in a stream, complete the requirements for the stream as specified in Table A.

8  Programs, majors and minors

(1) Bachelor of Science (Extended):

(a) Completion of a major, stream or program from Table A and a minor or second major from Table A or Table S is a requirement of the Bachelor of Science (Extended). Requirements for completion of majors and minors are as set out in Table A of the Bachelor of Science and Table S.

(b) Students in the Bachelor of Science (Extended) have the option of completing:

(i) a stream (which contains a major); and

(ii) a second major from Table A or Table S in place of the minor.

(2) Table A majors available in this course are as for the Bachelor of Science. Requirements for the majors are listed in the Bachelor of Science handbook.

(3) Table A minors available in this course are as for the Bachelor of Science. Requirements for the majors are listed in the Bachelor of Science handbook.

(4) Table A programs available in this course are as for the Bachelor of Science. Requirements for the programs are listed in the Bachelor of Science handbook.

(5) The minors and majors available as second majors in the Bachelor of Science (Extended) are as listed in Table A and Table S.

9  Satisfactory progress

Progress within a major, minor, stream, or program:

Enrolment and progress for each candidate for a major minor, stream, or program is governed by progression rules specified in the relevant Table for the component.

10  Cross-institutional study

Cross-institutional study is available in this course under conditions specified in the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science.

11  International mobility

The Faculty of Science encourages students in this course to participate in international exchange and global mobility programs as set out in the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science, provided that the progression requirements and timelines of the Course Resolutions can be met.

12  Course transfer

A student may transfer from this course to the Bachelor of Science. Transferring students may only receive credit for any units taken from Table A of the Bachelor of Science, Table S of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees, Table O (Open Learning Environment), and for relevant units of study in accordance with the course resolutions for the Bachelor of Science.

13  Credit for previous study

Credit transfer is subject to the provisions of the Coursework Policy and the Resolutions of the Faculty of Science or, in the case of a major or minor offered by another faculty, any relevant resolutions of that faculty.

14  Transitional provisions

(1) These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2024.

(2) Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2024 should complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
