Sydney Endocrine Surgery Unit

Improving treatment of thyroid, parathyroid & adrenal disease
We seek to better understand biology and outcomes for endocrine disease, using approaches that range from basic science, to translational and clinical research.

About us

We are the largest endocrine surgery unit in Australia and treat over 1,500 people each year with thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease across nine hospitals.

Our unit based at Royal North Shore Hospital manages an extensive endocrine surgery database and we work closely with the Kolling Institute Tumour Bank to provide a basis for much of our research.

Our research unit brings together a network of researchers and clinicians with the aim to improve understanding of endocrine disease and endocrine cancers and improve treatment.

Our multidisciplinary team includes endocrinologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, radiologists, scientists and allied health professionals.

Our research

Our work focuses on better understanding outcomes of endocrine surgery using clinical outcomes and tissue samples. Through this, we seek to improve existing treatments and develop new treatment options for endocrine surgery disease.

Our current research specifically focuses on the challenges related to:

  • thyroid cancer – how can we better understand outcomes and how can we better treat advanced disease?
  • parathyroid disease – how can we improve outcomes from surgery for hyperparathyroidism?
  • adrenal cancer – how can be better understand biology and develop effective treatment?

Research highlights

  • Our researchers have published more than 45 peer-reviewed papers since 2017.
  • Dr Anthony Glover was recently awarded $540K in funding from the Cancer Institute Early Career Fellowship (2030-23).

Get involved

Our unit has opportunities for students of all levels and research projects can be tailored to research experience. We are affiliated with the Kolling Institute of Medical Research and Garvan Institute of Medical Research and regularly collaborate with industry and international units in endocrine surgery projects.
