Mr Andrew Spence awarded Honorary Fellowship of the University

Mr Spence is a valued member of the University of Sydney community, and to honour his numerous and vital contributions; he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the University.

Mr Andrew Spence was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the University. His ceremony was presided over by Chancellor Belinda Hutchinson AC. 

Mr Spence is a valued member of the University of Sydney community, and to honour his numerous and vital contributions; he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the University.  

“Andrew is a valued and engaged supporter of the University of Sydney community. We’re incredibly grateful for his commitment and contribution as a committee member and imparting his exceptional knowledge and experience as Qantas Super’s Chief Investment Officer,” said Chancellor Hutchinson. “He is highly respected in the Australian investment community.  The University greatly appreciates his work with our investment team to grow our funds under management facilitating Sydney’s bright present and future.”

Mr Spence has fostered a longstanding and dynamic relationship with the University of Sydney over many years in the Senate’s investment committees. 

He graduated from the University of East Anglia with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Accounting and Finance, and he went on to receive the prestigious London School of Economics Executive Education Scholarship. 

Since completing his studies, Mr Spence has fostered a successful 30-year career in professional money management. In 2008 he was appointed the inaugural Chief Investment Officer at Qantas Super, where he has executive responsibility for all aspects of Qantas Super’s $8 billion investment program. 

Mr Spence has devoted ten years of voluntary service to the University and has overseen the management of the University’s financial portfolio, ensuring Sydney’s strong financial position.

Through his guidance, the University’s funds have powered through unfavourable market forces and yielded successful results, and his extensive networking has given Sydney insights into happenings in other sectors. 

With his personable and diplomatic approach, Mr Spence has made himself generously available to the University’s Investment and Capital Management team as a valuable sounding board. He was involved in the evolution of the University’s Environmental, Social, and Governance policy and in establishing an innovative target to reduce our portfolio carbon emissions. 

Mr Spence’s invaluable knowledge and generosity have helped sustain the University, and with his support, the future at Sydney is bright.

Honorary fellowships are awarded to individuals on the basis of conspicuous continued involvement in supporting the interests and welfare of the University of Sydney.
