The University of Sydney and leading healthcare provider Calvary today announced a formal partnership aimed at shaping the sector through clinical placements, education, and staff development.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) solidifies the relationship between the University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health and Calvary and signifies the importance of industry collaboration in meeting growing needs for quality healthcare.

Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott AO, said the University is proud to be partnering with Calvary.

We look forward to building on our strong history together to further develop training and educational opportunities for Calvary staff and Sydney students.

“We support Calvary’s ongoing mission to ensure its workforce is at the forefront of evidence-based, best practice health care. We look forward to building on our strong history together to further develop training and educational opportunities for Calvary staff and Sydney students.”

The partnership will facilitate opportunities for Calvary staff to undertake ongoing professional development programs, such as through short courses, micro-credentials, or postgraduate programs.

The two organisations will explore ways in which these offerings can be tailored to Calvary’s needs as a large health care provider. Calvary has over 18,000 staff operating across a network of public and private hospitals, 72 residential care and retirement communities and 19 community care service centres.

The University and Calvary will also explore a potential academy where each organisation will use their education expertise to develop a portfolio of fit-for-purpose educational opportunities for Calvary staff at all stages of their career learning lifetime.

University students in health or biomedical science programs will also have the opportunity to undertake clinical placements at Calvary to demonstrate how their theoretical learning can be implemented, gain vital professional experience and better prepare them for the workplace.

The two organisations will also explore opportunities to collaborate on research and the translation and implementation of science into the clinic.

“Calvary is committed to delivering quality, responsive and compassionate healthcare, and this strategic partnership with the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health supports our vision to harness and grow an innovative workforce to pursue models of care that meet the emerging health and social needs of the communities we serve,” said Calvary National CEO Martin Bowles.

“Today’s signing of this Memorandum of Understanding combines our mutual interests to explore opportunities that further upskill Calvary’s existing team members with tailored professional development, and engage our workforce of the future through clinical placements and collaboration in research, translation and implementation science.

“The MoU further strengthens the existing relationship that Calvary has with the University of Sydney in the research space, including StepUp for Dementia Research, and we look forward to further developing these opportunities.”
