University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott will serve as the Group of Eight's new Chair.

The University of Sydney’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Mark Scott, has been appointed by the Group of Eight Board as its new Chair.

Professor Scott has served as Deputy Chair since 1 February 2023 and was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney in 2021.

He will replace outgoing Chair, Australian National University Vice-Chancellor and Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist Professor Brian Schmidt, who announced last year his intention to step down as ANU Vice-Chancellor.

Universities should be recognised as one of Australia’s most vital social institutions.

Professor Scott said he was delighted to take up the role in a year that also celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Group of Eight.

"Our universities play an important role in contributing to economic growth, societal well-being, and national security and should be recognised as one of Australia’s most vital social institutions," he said.

"We all share one goal: we want our young people to have a bright future and be a force for good and universities will help drive Australia’s future success."

Group of Eight Chief Executive Vicki Thomson said Professor Scott was an outstanding appointment.

"Professor Scott is a highly respected and successful senior leader of large and complex institutions, across Australia’s education sector, the public service and the media.  His appointment ensures the continuity of excellent leadership at the helm of Australia’s leading research-intensive universities."

The appointment is effective from 1 January 2024.
