The Other Portrait

9 June 2021
New exhibition opens 17 June
A new exhibition brings together the works of contemporary artists who explore the concept and traditions of portraiture. The exhibition will be accompanied by a panel discussion and a series of artist talks.

The Other Portrait features existing and newly commissioned works by ten artists: Cigdem Aydemir, Simon Cooper, Gabriella Mangano, Silvana Mangano, Sara Oscar, Patrick Pound, Ronnie van Hout, William Yang, as well as curators Julie Rrap (SCA) and Cherine Fahd (UTS).

The exhibition, shown across SCA Galleries and the UTS Gallery,  demonstrates the extent to which subjectivity, representation and the body continue to pose important questions for artists.

The Other Portrait examines the ways artists have often drawn on themselves: their faces, bodies, families, communities, cultures and experiences in video, photography and sculpture,” said co-curator Julie Rrap, Sydney College of the Arts.

The SCA offers and delivers an evolving and contemporary art program through academics who work with external partners to collaborate on exhibitions and publicly engaged projects. The Other Portrait is a wonderful reflection of this.

The exhibition’s  catalogue features texts by the curators, a guest essay by MCA Chief Curator Rachel Kent and process images by the exhibiting artists.

The opening weekend program at UTS Gallery will feature a panel discussion with Julie Rrap, Cherine Fahd, Rachel Kent, Associate Professor Lee Wallace from the University of Sydney, and artist Patrick Pound. SCA Galleries will host a series of artists talks.
