Our first Lendlease Bradfield Scholar

22 October 2015
Now is the time to create a vibrant, affordable, sustainable and desirable place to live

A big vision for Sydney's future that would have us all residents of central living districts (CLDs) has won 20-year-old first year undergraduate student Caitlin Hanrahan the inaugural Lendlease Bradfield Urban Vision Scholarship.

The scholarship aims to encourage academic excellence and creativity

“With a population of 10 million, CLDs are the key to making Sydney in 2060 the most liveable city in the world,” the Lendlease Bradfield Scholar told an audience of 200 business leaders attending latest night’s Bradfield Oration.

The combined Bachelor of Engineering Honours and Bachelor of Commerce student said “Sydney should be reshaped into a series of interconnected CLDs evenly distributed across the city with an efficient interconnecting transport system, rather than one sprawling gridlocked central business district.”

Caitlin said her vision for CLDs would be for high-density districts located across the metropolitan area from the Sydney’s CBD and potentially include regions such as North Sydney, Chatswood, Castle Hill, Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Bankstown.

The CLDs would include essential infrastructure such as healthcare, education and entertainment services.

“Now is the time to create a vibrant, affordable, sustainable and desirable place to live,” she told her audience.

The Lendlease Bradfield Urban Vision Scholarship which will be awarded annually was established last year in recognition of the legacy of John Bradfield, the celebrated engineer and University of Sydney alumnus whose grand ideas and vision drove two of Sydney’s most transformative projects - the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the city’s underground railway system.

The scholarship aims to encourage academic excellence and creativity in first and second year undergraduate students in studies related to urbanism.

The University of Sydney and Lendlease are working as part of the Bradfield Partnership, which seeks to discover the young men and women who will advance Sydney in future decades.

The Lendlease John Bradfield Scholarship Fund will support undergraduate students studying the development of cities, with a special emphasis on encouraging women to study in these fields.

The scholarship is available to students from the disciplines of urban development, urban planning and design, project finance, project and facilities management, and engineering at the University of Sydney.

Steve McCann, managing director and CEO, said the scholarship would allow us to find and support the next generation of visionaries.

Congratulating all the finalists, Mr McCann said the Bradfield governors were very impressed by the nominees for the scholarship. “Each of our finalists understands that to attract the best people and the businesses that will employ Australians in the new century we have to prioritise the sustainability, productivity and livability of Sydney.

“Bradfield’s achievements are an inspiration to the team at Lendlease, who themselves have contributed so much to Sydney through the years, from the Opera House and Australia Square Tower, to Barangaroo and Darling Harbour Live.

The Lendlease Bradfield Urban Vision Scholarship will help support Sydney’s next Bradfield with a proud emphasis on encouraging young women who aspire to shape the Sydney of the future,” he said.
