Exams

Types of online exams

Your Canvas exam site

For each of your exams, you’ll have a Canvas site on your dashboard where you’ll log in to complete your exam. Each site will be identified by unit code, eg. 'Exam for: UNITXXX'.

These sites will appear on your dashboard 5 working days before your exam.

These sites include specific instructions and key things you need to do to prepare for that exam, so make sure you check them ahead of time.

Your site will include:

  • the date of your exam
  • start time
  • duration - this includes any allocated reading time
  • format – e.g. Canvas quiz and/or assignment
  • materials required
  • materials provided - e.g. formula sheet, answer template, case study.

ProctorU supervised exams

ProctorU is an online testing service, that uses a combination of webcam, microphone, speakers and screen sharing to deliver proctored (supervised) exams.

Make sure you’ve read our guide in Canvas on taking online exams. It includes a video that explains the process of preparing for and taking proctored exams online through ProctorU, has practice exams for you to try and lets you know how to get help if you need it.

There are two types of supervision that we’ll be using for our exams. Your unit of study outline will tell you ahead of time which format your exam will be in.

Live+

These exams will also be called ‘Type A’ on your unit of study outline. This involves a human supervisor launching and monitoring the assessment and supervising you throughout. You won’t be able to see the supervisor but you can contact them at any time using the chat option. You’ll be asked to do a room check which involves you moving your webcam around the room to show the supervisor your space. Find out more about Live+ and watch a demo video of how it will work.

If you have a Live+ exam you will also need to schedule your exam ahead of time. Find out how to schedule your exam.

Review+

These exams will also be called ‘Type B’ on your unit of study outline. This uses an AI software to launch and monitor the exam. There is no live monitoring during the exam but a supervisor will review the recording after and any flags raised by the AI software. The AI will check your environment in the room for you so you won’t need to do a webcam room check like you do with the Live+ exams. Find out more about Review+ and watch a demo video of how it will work.

Open-book exams

These exams will also be called ‘Type C’ on your unit of study outline. Open-book exams are completed in a limited time and are not supervised.

You will need to log into your Canvas site at a specific time, and will have a set time-limit to complete your exam.

You will need to check the Canvas site for your exam for the specific instructions and any materials required.

Short-release take-home exams

These exams will also be called ‘Type D’ on your unit of study outline. These are usually a maximum of 3 hours in duration. They are meant to closely reflect the original timed exam, and exam duration includes reading time. The exam duration also includes time for downloading and uploading of your exam. Exams are open book.

You will need to check the Canvas site for your exam for the specific instructions and any materials required.

Extended release take-home exams

These exams will also be called ‘Type E’ on your unit of study outline. These are not strictly timed exams and usually need to be completed over 1 to 3 days. You will have the time to refine your answers and will be expected to include referencing. The duration of the exam is not a reflection of the time expected to be spent on completing the exam but is designed to offer more flexibility within the allocated time. Exams are open book, and in some instances, you may be expected to undertake some research.

You will need to check the Canvas site for your exam for the specific instructions and any materials required.
