DENT5038: Restorative Paediatric Dentistry Part 2

2024 unit information

This course follows on from Restorative Dentistry Part 1 and ensures that trainees have advanced knowledge of paediatric restorative techniques. It will the emphasise the evidence-based practice of paediatric restorative dentistry, the materials used and comparison of restorative and endodontic techniques. The concept of minimal intervention dentistry will be further explored, together with social factors that influence caries risk and restorative success. Trainees will learn advanced restorative techniques required for the management of children with congenital and acquired dental anomalies and restorative options in the care of medically compromised patients.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. perform restorations of the primary and young permanent dentitions
  • LO2. possess a clear knowledge of advanced restorative techniques required for the management of children with congenital or acquired dental anomalies
  • LO3. perform pulp therapy proficiently
  • LO4. possess an advanced knowledge of and can apply evidenced-based practice
  • LO5. display proficiency in the delivery of care in relation to disease risk
  • LO6. assess success and critically self-assess
  • LO7. possess advanced knowledge about materials used in paediatric dental practice, including: amalgam, glass ionomers, composite resins for anterior and posterior teeth, stainless steel crowns, fissure sealants, and advanced prosthodontics
  • LO8. possess advanced knowledge about concepts in minimal intervention dentistry and a preventive approach to practice
  • LO9. possess advanced knowledge in the social factors that influence success
  • LO10. possess advanced knowledge in the restorative options in the care of the medically compromised patient.
