DENT5235: Restorative Dentistry 2
This course ensures that students have an evidenced-based approach to clinical dentistry and are expert in the delivery of clinical care. It will be the foundation of clinical practice in this discipline and covers all the clinical aspects of prevention, repair and maintenance of the primary and permanent dentition in children, adolescents and adults. The importance of sound diagnostic criteria leading to the creation of rational treatment plans is emphasised. The candidate should develop a sound understanding of differing treatment philosophies, materials and techniques. The importance of flexibility in treatment techniques to coincide with the advances in dental materials is stressed.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. demonstrate the skills required to assess, diagnose and provide clinical care for individual patients requiring special needs dentistry in a variety of settings
- LO2. obtain consent using appropriate language and methods of communication as required by people with cognitive, sensory and/or other communication impairments
- LO3. identify and manage disorders of oral function in individual patients requiring special needs dentistry
- LO4. assign the appropriate pain management and behavioural facilitation techniques for individual patients requiring special needs dentistry
- LO5. demonstrate experience of risk assessment, treatment planning and provision of dental care for patients under sedation and general anaesthesia
- LO6. demonstrate safe transfer techniques and appropriate positioning aids where necessary for individual patients with physical disabilities
- LO7. understand the emotional experience of living with disability, chronic health condition and coping with situations such as transition of age and loss
- LO8. recognise aspects of both verbal and non-verbal communication relating to pain, anxiety and phobia in patients requiring special needs dentistry
- LO9. identify pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods that can be used to manage pain, anxiety and phobia in patients requiring special needs dentistry
- LO10. understand and demonstrate clinical proficiency in the management of patients with special or additional needs via non-pharmacological behavioural management
- LO11. understand and demonstrate clinical proficiency in the management of patients with special or additional needs via the use of pharmacological adjuncts such as relative analgesia, oral and intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia
- LO12. acknowledge the impact of impairment, disability and social exclusion on oral healthcare planning, and be competent to utilise the appropriate clinical care pathways and coordinate an inter-professional team to deliver individualised oral health care plans
- LO13. understand and demonstrate competency in assessing an indvidual’s capacity to consent and understand the role of the family and caregivers in assisted decision-making
- LO14. understand and demonstrate respect for patient autonomy and apply appropriate rationale for the use of physical and pharmacological intervention
- LO15. understand and demonstrate the use of effective communication strategies in the healthcare setting to develop meaningful interactions with people according to their specific needs
- LO16. understand and utilise communication strategies that encourage patient autonomy and participation, in partnership with families and caregivers where appropriate
- LO17. understand and design acceptable comprehensive treatment plans in the appropriate setting according to individual characteristics, risk, local guidelines and protocols
- LO18. understand and apply the evidence base to develop oral health care plans to stabilise and maintain oral health in people requiring special needs dentistry
- LO19. coordinate an inter-disciplinary team including allied oral healthcare professionals in the delivery of optimal clinical care for people requiring special needs dentistry
- LO20. understand and demonstrate the ability to work with caregivers and residential care homes to prevent oral disease
- LO21. demonstrate inter-professional communication with medical teams to gather information and integrate oral risk assessment into key stages of medical care pathways
- LO22. confer and collaborate in a professional manner with different dental specialties and refer to other specialists regarding treatment options outside of individual scope of practice.
