The aim of this unit is to understand the key features of economic growth, both theoretically and empirically. The first part of the unit will introduce theoretical models from the recent literature on the economics of ideas, growth and development, social infrastructure, population, and natural resources. These will be used to develop an analytical framework of economic growth in historical perspective and across countries. The relationship between growth, technical progress, income distribution along with the role of economic policies and institutions will be considered. Sources of differences in income and growth across countries will also be examined.
