LNGS7563: Sounds of Language

2024 unit information

This unit covers analysis of the sounds of language as a foundation for understanding cultural diversity of language, and applications of linguistic understanding. Phonetics studies the physical properties of human speech. Phonology studies the representation and organization of sound in human language. This unit introduces students to these two core fields in linguistics, including an overview of the diversity found in the world's languages. Basic phonological patterns are explored and students are given hands-on practice in analysing these patterns. Students will learn principles of analysis of the sounds of language and diverse applications of knowledge and practice in this field.
