Assessment summary

Interdisciplinary day attendance: Students will spend the day on an interdisciplinary project. This is a university wide day. Students who are unable to attend are offered an alternative date.

Tutorial and clinic attendance: Students attend 80% tutorial and clinic observations as scheduled throughout the semester.

Completion of essential requirements: Students complete the academic honesty education module (AHEM) as required by the University of Sydney. Students also must complete the clinical placement checks and clearances including CPR certificate as required by the University of Sydney.

ACE: The ACE Program is an on-line module designed to accelerate the development of your professional communication skills in listening, reading, writing, speaking and reasoning. For each of these professional areas you will learn how to accelerate your skills, followed by the opportunity to self -assess your skills and confidence. Students are also required to complete brief assessments of their own oral and written communication skills. Students who are unable to attend on their scheduled date should apply for special consideration so that other arrangements can be made. Students who do not pass the assessment are required to complete the ACE Immersive. ACE aims to better prepare you for your first clinic placement by helping you bridge the gap from your classroom studies to working with clients in real life settings.

Simulated Interview: Students work in pairs to conduct an initial interview with a parent (actor). Students who are unable to attend on their scheduled date should apply for special consideration so that other arrangements can be made.

Child assessment and report task: Students will work in pairs to assess a child and complete a report. Students will also submit an individual reflection and relevant clinical paperwork. Students who are unable to attend on their scheduled date or to complete the required assessment report should apply for special consideration so that other arrangements can be made.

Progress Note (Parent Interview): Students work in pairs to complete a progress note from the simulated parent interview.

Reflection – Clinic Observation: Students submit a 500 word written reflection based on their clinic observations.

Detailed information for each assessment can be found on Canvas.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Academic integrity

The Current Student website  provides information on academic integrity and the resources available to all students. The University expects students and staff to act ethically and honestly and will treat all allegations of academic integrity breaches seriously.

We use similarity detection software to detect potential instances of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breach. If such matches indicate evidence of plagiarism or other forms of academic integrity breaches, your teacher is required to report your work for further investigation.

You may only use artificial intelligence and writing assistance tools in assessment tasks if you are permitted to by your unit coordinator, and if you do use them, you must also acknowledge this in your work, either in a footnote or an acknowledgement section.

Studiosity is permitted for postgraduate units unless otherwise indicated by the unit coordinator. The use of this service must be acknowledged in your submission.

Simple extensions

If you encounter a problem submitting your work on time, you may be able to apply for an extension of five calendar days through a simple extension.  The application process will be different depending on the type of assessment and extensions cannot be granted for some assessment types like exams.

Special consideration

If exceptional circumstances mean you can’t complete an assessment, you need consideration for a longer period of time, or if you have essential commitments which impact your performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Special consideration applications will not be affected by a simple extension application.

Using AI responsibly

Co-created with students, AI in Education includes lots of helpful examples of how students use generative AI tools to support their learning. It explains how generative AI works, the different tools available and how to use them responsibly and productively.

Attendance and class requirements

  • Lecture attendance: It is recommended that students attend all lectures to ensure they are fully prepared for their assessable professional practice tasks.
  • Tutorial and clinic observation attendance: Tutorials are highly recommended as these are simulated clinic learning experiences. Tutorials specifically teach and support the skills required to complete their assessable professional practice tasks. Students are required to attend 80% tutorial and clinic observations as scheduled.
  • Child Assessment: Each student is required to attend a school site for the child assessment task.
    • Students are required to attend all preparatory meetings with their clinical educators, and the child assessment day. Students will be allocated to attend a school site for the child assessment day on a Tuesday or Friday during Weeks 5 to 7. For any specific requests regarding placement dates, students should submit an Extenuating Circumstances form.
    • Students must complete clinical paperwork relating to the Child Assessment, including:
      • WHS checklist
      • clinical practice hours form
      • other required paperwork as appropriate

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

Required readings

All readings for this unit can be accessed on the Library eReserve link available on Canvas.

  • Stagnitti, K., Schoo, A., Welch, D. (2013) Clinical and Fieldwork Placement in the Health Professions. 2nd Edition. Oxford University Press. Australia.
