DESN3003: Design for Social Impact

This unit gets students to consider the broader application of design thinking as a way of informing and creating social outcomes. Design for social impact aims to design solutions to meet social needs in a better way than the existing solution. Students will have the opportunity to develop their design thinking competency through the application of a real-world social problem. Students will address prevailing or emerging social issues through the design of products, services and experiences. Students will be guided through the design thinking process of understanding user and stakeholder needs, defining problems, ideating solutions, prototyping and testing design solutions. This unit gives students the opportunity to tackle the challenges of 21st Century life through the exploration of new technology and current practices to design the future they want to live in.

  • Design statement – what is design for social impact?:  
    This assessment asks you to write a 1000-word statement on the question “What is design for social impact?” You are required to present your statement in any written, visual, audio or audiovisual format you think best communicates your thoughts.
  • Communicating Research: In small groups, you are required to give a 10-minute presentation in Week 7 that communicates your research on  Part 1 of the Major Design Project. Presentation slides, plus an appendix that documents the breadth of research undertaken must be submitted online.
  • Major Design Project: In small groups, you are required to work on a social impact design project. The aim of this project is to explore how design can be used to respond to a social issue. The design project will be presented in the form of a brief. You will produce a visual report and deliver a 10-minute verbal presentation during class time on the due date; each group member is required to contribute.

    Reflective Report: 
  • This assessment requires you to write a reflective report that critically examines your personal response to learnings taken from DESN3003, using the work completed on your Major Design Project as a point of reference. You are required to move beyond describing your experiences, to critically reflect upon your understanding of those experiences.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Special consideration

If you experience short-term circumstances beyond your control, such as illness, injury or misadventure or if you have essential commitments which impact your preparation or performance in an assessment, you may be eligible for special consideration or special arrangements.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.

USS 2021 feedback indicated high student satisfaction with the unit. However, RE students commented that online learning was harder than CC. As such, the RE experience will be closely monitored in 2022.
