IBUS6003: Managing International Risk

This unit introduces students to the multi-level risk environments encountered by multinational enterprise and the processes and strategies that can be employed to identify, assess, manage and mitigate risk. Topics covered include multinational enterprise and expropriation, sovereign risk and corruption, political and regulatory risk, brand and corporate reputation risk management, managing anti-globalization protests and consumer boycotts, terrorism risk, and executive risk and risk management and a short introduction to financial risk and risk management. The unit also introduces the various analytical approaches involved in designing risk identification systems, reporting and monitoring protocols, and how risk is able to be assessed, prioritized and effectively managed. The unit emphasizes a problem case-based approach to learning using workshops and simulation exercises.

  • Weekly online quiz: This is an open book exam and you will be provided with a short case to analyse and worksheets in which to write your analysis. This exam is designed to test your knowledge of the key topics covered in the first 9 weeks of the semester. You will also be tested on your ability to critically apply the knowledge you have gained to analyse a short business case.
  • Risk management proposal: In teams of 5 members, you will be tasked to assess a company’s current and future risks and recommend an ISO 31000-compliant risk management system. You will be expected to draw on relevant theories, concepts and frameworks taken up in class. Your team will prepare and record a 10 minute powerpoint presentation that summarises your analysis and recommendations, accompanied by a 2500 word risk management proposal. You will present this poster to a panel of risk management professionals.
  • Final exam: This exam is designed to test your knowledge of the topics covered in the whole semester. You will also be tested on your ability to critically apply the knowledge you have gained to analyse short cases. The exam will cover all the lectures and the readings for this unit.

Assessment criteria

The University awards common result grades, set out in the Coursework Policy 2014 (Schedule 1).

As a general guide, a high distinction indicates work of an exceptional standard, a distinction a very high standard, a credit a good standard, and a pass an acceptable standard.

Late submission

In accordance with University policy, these penalties apply when written work is submitted after 11:59pm on the due date:

  • Deduction of 5% of the maximum mark for each calendar day after the due date.
  • After ten calendar days late, a mark of zero will be awarded.

Lecture recordings: All lectures and seminars are recorded and will be available on Canvas for student use. Please note the Business School does not own the system and cannot guarantee that the system will operate or that every class will be recorded. Students should ensure they attend and participate in all classes.

Study commitment

Typically, there is a minimum expectation of 1.5-2 hours of student effort per week per credit point for units of study offered over a full semester. For a 6 credit point unit, this equates to roughly 120-150 hours of student effort in total.
