This unit takes as its object the various spaces and places that came to mark modern Paris in the wake of Haussmann's controversial redesign of the city in the 1850s and 1860s. We will explore in particular the relationship between the architecture of these spaces, bodily orientation and the senses. Unsettling the traditional hierarchy of the senses, we will focus on the ways in which the olfactory, the haptic, the acoustic and the visual intersect to position those who inhabit, or pass through, these spaces as 'citizens' of modern Paris. The spaces on which we focus thus serve as points of entry into both the history of Paris and the cultural history of the senses.
