What is Sonder?

Sonder is a smartphone app designed to give you 24/7 on demand access to wellbeing and safety professionals and resources, all at the touch of a button.

Sonder cares about keeping you safe and healthy. You can reach out using the Sonder app at anytime - day or night - for safety, medical or mental health.

How to access Sonder

From 31 May 2022, you’ll receive an email from Sonder at your University email account. The email will have the subject line ‘Welcome to Sonder’.

  1. Download the Sonder app on your smart phone using the unique link and/or QR code in your email. If you can’t find the email, check your spam folder.
  2. Once downloaded, create an account using your University of Sydney email address from your OSHC policy.
  3. Once registered, you will have 24/7 access to Sonder’s support services spanning physical and mental health and safety.

Sonder and your privacy

We will give Sonder some personal information about you so that you can create a Sonder account. The information we give Sonder includes your full name, university email address, phone number (including country code), faculty name, student id, UniKey, and Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Introduction

The University has subscribed to the Sonder platform to provide you with access to its wellbeing and safety services.

We will give Sonder some personal information about you so that you can create a Sonder account. The information we give Sonder includes your full name, university email address, phone number (including country code), faculty name, student id, UniKey, and Unique Student Identifier (USI).

Registering for Sonder is voluntary, however if you do not provide the personal information required for registration upon the Sonder app sign-up process, you will not be able to access the platform.

Information that Sonder collects about you

If you choose to use it, Sonder will collect any personal and health information you voluntarily provide while using the Sonder service, including profile information, chat history, information about clinical and non-clinical referrals, phone and in-person consultations, and geo-location data. Note that some services such as clinical referrals and geo-location may not be available outside Australia.

Sonder may collect personal information about you from third parties, such as its service providers or from a publicly available record.

Sonder will also collect non-identifying technical information when you use the Sonder service, such as your device ID and type, IP address and web log information, geo-location data, information about page views, and your web traffic. Sonder may collect information via cookies, however this information will usually not identify you.

How Sonder uses and shares your information

Sonder will use your personal information for the purpose of providing you with wellbeing and safety services. If you contact them to request support, Sonder counsellors and staff will use your information to provide you with advice and support.

Sonder will share your personal information with its technical and clinical service providers where reasonably necessary for operating and securing the Sonder service provided to you.

If you choose to use Sonder’s referral service, Sonder will share your personal and health information with its Australian-based clinical partners, and Sonder will collect information from those clinical partners about your referral.

If the severity and complexity of your support request is moderate or higher, Sonder may contact you within 24 hours to check if you need further assistance.

If you want the University to provide you with additional support and if you consent to it, Sonder will share your personal or health information you agree to with the us.

Sonder will provide us with a quarterly summary report containing aggregated and de-identified information about incidents, trend analysis, user feedback, and utilisation of the Sonder app.

Sonder will only share your personal information with third parties to provide you with assistance where:

  • you have consented, or
  • Sonder believes it is reasonably necessary to prevent or lessen a serious and imminent threat to the life or health of you or another person, or
  • Sonder is required or authorised to do so by law.

Storage and security of your personal information

Sonder is owned by Sonder Australia Pty Ltd. Your personal information will be stored securely in Amazon Web Services data centres located in Australia. Sonder will dispose of your personal information securely at the end of its service agreement with us, subject to any legal requirements to maintain records.
