A major in Engineering Design enables students to consolidate their skills in design and manufacturability into a focused program. The 21st century engineer needs to be more creative and be able to communicate unique solutions using a combination of graphical, oral, presentation and written skills. Technology is very quickly replacing traditional engineering skills with a complement of analysis and heuristic focused software. A multidisciplinary focused design engineer that is able to ideate using a range of creativity methods on broad interdisciplinary projects is the new need.

Graduate opportunities

The Major in Engineering Design provides students with suitable background knowledge in core areas including: design in response to RFP (request for proposals), engineering drawings, computer aided design, designing to Australian and Global Regulatory Standards, loading, operation, performance, sustainment, fatigue-life based considerations, advanced analysis methods, advanced manufacturing methods and design verification methodologies.

Students from the mechanical or aeronautical stream undertaking the engineering design major will also gain practical and creative design skills combined with a human centred design thinking approach. Students enrolled in the Engineering Design major are provided with experiential learning opportunities and facilities to prototype and test physical designs. Employment opportunities for students graduating with a Major in Engineering Design may enter a broad range of disciplines as they are versed with the ability to creatively solve engineering design problems using different heuristic methods imposed by an ever changing design space requirement.
