Schedule of Teaching Areas

1. This schedule defines the requirements for teaching areas, which address subject content knowledge requirements in compliance with Australian Professional Standards for Teachers as set out by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). Unaccredited teaching areas are indicated in the course resolutions and respective table(s) below.

2. The Sydney School of Education and Social Work (SSESW) is responsible for ensuring that this schedule aligns with NESA requirements.

3. Requirements for teaching areas should be read together with course resolutions for:

a. Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education),

b. Bachelor of Education (Secondary), and

c. Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Secondary).

4. Teaching areas define a candidate’s professional curriculum focus, referred to as

a. first teaching area (36 credit points), satisfied through completion of an eligible major or a minor (see 5. for additional requirements in certain cases);

i. in the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) the first teaching area is satisfied through completion of the core units of study; and

b. second teaching area (24 credit points), the requirements for which are set out in this schedule.

5. Additional requirements apply to certain teaching areas:

a. Ancient History

i. Students must complete as part of, or in addition to, the major or minor, 6 credit points of ARCO-coded units and 6 credit points of HSTY-coded units;

b. History

i. Students must complete, as part of or in addition to, the major or minor, 6 credit points of ANHS-coded units; and 6 credit points of Australian history (i.e. a unit whose subject matter is wholly Australian, usually interpreted as units with “Sydney” or “Australia” in the title);

c. Geography

i. GEOS-coded units of study completed must have a balance of human geography units and physical geography units;

d. TESOL/EALD

i. When completing a minor in Linguistics to satisfy a first teaching area in TESOL/EALD, the second teaching area must also be completed as a minor (36 credit points).

6. The requirements for majors and minors are set out in the Learning and Teaching Policy and appear in Table S of the Interdisciplinary Handbook.

7. Accreditation in these teaching areas is achieved by completion of academic units of study and curriculum units of study in these teaching areas, and the requirements of the degree, validated by presentation to the governing body of accreditation of a certified copy of the testamur or graduation certifcate and the acadmic transcript.

8. Teaching areas are not awarded on the testamur. Majors and minors which may comprise the first teaching areas appear the testamur. Second teaching areas appear on the academic transcript.
