At one of Sydney Law School’s largest annual events, donors, alumni and staff came together to celebrate this year’s prize and scholarship winners.
PhD student Brendan Loizou, a Warlpiri man from the Northern Territory, provided a thoughtful, impactful Acknowledgement of Country.
The Dean and Head of School, Professor Fleur Johns, congratulated the students for their outstanding achievements, acknowledging the effort and commitment to excellence that is required to stand out amongst the Law School’s cohort. She also recognised the importance of a strong support network of family, friends, and Law School staff, which allows students to flourish.
“It’s as though each prize is a flowering of a collaborative effort […], and that collaborative effort is the root system for each of these little flowers that we express in the prize.”

The prestigious University Medal in Law was jointly awarded to two students, Jules Edwards and Rachael Louise Li, who each delivered a personal and heartfelt student address.
Emma Downham was recognised as the top ranked student in the Juris Doctor cohort.
Alexandra Wasiel delivered a special address, drawing from her personal experiences to give advice to students with equal measures of humour and wisdom.

The Master of Ceremonies for the evening Professor Penelope Crossley, Director of Alumni Engagement, spoke of the wide-ranging talents of our Law students, and testified to their resilience and the strength in the face of adversity.
“To our students tonight, we are so proud of you. Not only for what you have achieved, but for who you are becoming. It is your talent and your tenacity and your heart that really makes this Law School.”
